Return of Captain Gage, dated July 24, that he has got but ten men

v6:1228

Amherst, July 24, 1776.

Colony of NEW-HAMPSHIRE, HILLSBOROUGH, ss:

In obedience to the within order, I have endeavoured to raise the men, but have got but ten, several of the men that I laid it upon to do a turn absolutely refusing to do anything toward going or hiring, viz: Joshua Atherton, John Hollon, Ebenezer Weston, &c. Those persons being these that ought to do, and it is well known by the people, therefore others will not do anything till those or their estates have done a turn.

JAMES GAGE, Captain.

To the Honourable Committee of Safety for the Colony of New-Hampshire.
